Software release 2.3: Use Pickit to detect flat objects and define your tool model from a CAD file

2020 has reemphasized the need for automation in manufacturing processes as industries worldwide are still coming in terms with the new normal amidst the pandemic. To continue helping you with your automation goals, we have a new software update with some more essential features for bin picking.

What is in it for you?

Use Pickit to improve the detection of flat objects and define your tool model with a CAD file. Yes, we heard you!

Based on the feedback we get from the market, the Pickit team keeps pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in (bin) picking. Here’s what’s new:

Flat object detection

Pickit Teach is great for detecting objects with a distinctive 3D shape. Flat objects are different from other 3D shapes in the sense that edges are the main source of shape information.

This release enables Pickit Teach to detect flat objects more reliably by focusing on shape edges.

Define your tool model from a CAD file

In the previous 2.2 release, we added support for teaching part models from CAD. In this release, we extend this so that you can define your tool model from a CAD file.

Alternatively, if a CAD file for your tool is not readily available, you can still define your tool using the existing generic tool models.

Pickit allows you to model the robot tool that is used for picking. Defining a tool model is not mandatory, but highly recommended for the following reasons:

  • In constrained picking scenarios like bin picking, it’s possible to prevent collisions between the robot tool and the bin or other objects.
  • When defining pick points, it’s helpful to visualize the robot tool with respect to the object to confirm the correct placement of a pick point.

Assign different tools to different pick points

It’s now possible to create multiple tool models and assign different tools to different pick points. A common example would be a two-finger gripper used with varying distances of opening depending on the selected pick point.
